Tex Weatherly receives
Acknowledging his 52 years of tree planting, this year's Johnny Appleseed Award went to Tex Weatherly. Tex previously worked for the Soil Conservation Service (currently the NRCS) until his retirement in 1994. Tex is a dedicated employee who embodies conservation leadership as a current Stutsman County Soil Conservation District employee. He also chairs Jamestown's Shade Tree Committee. City forester Vern Quam stated that Weatherly's efforts go beyond trees to other conservation practices in the county such as grasses, wildlife plantings and ponds. "I don't know if I'm deserving of this award, but I do know that I've been planting trees since 1956", Weatherly said. In the 52 years Tex has been working in natural resources, it is estimated that he has planted over a million trees in Stutsman County. He has also been instrumental in establishing grass plantings, ponds, fences, field and farmstead windbreaks, wildlife plots, conservation tillage and many other beneficial practices. Tex is always willing to help young and old learn about trees and tree care. He is involved with Eco-Ed, goes to schools to speak and has done demonstrations with the tree planter. Tex regularly contributes tree-related articles to the District newsletter. He has also created an arboretum showcasing many varieties of trees, making it easier for customers to visualize how a particular tree or shrub will fit into their landscape.
